Patriot Front
Identity and history
Patriot Front is a U.S.-based white nationalist and neo-fascist organization
founded in August 2017 by Thomas Rousseau, days after "Unite the Right" rally
organizers in Charlottesville, Virginia drew widespread public condemnation.
Rousseau, previously a leader within the group Vanguard America, formed
Patriot Front as a rebranded, more disciplined successor effort, adopting
Americana-styled imagery (flags, colonial-era references) alongside its
underlying ideology.
Ideology and stated objectives
Patriot Front's own manifesto, published on its official website, states that
"membership within the American nation is inherited through blood, not ink"
and frames its objective as a "multigenerational" project to reorganize the
country around what it calls "natural distinctions between sexes and races."
The manifesto also describes American democracy as having "failed" and calls
for organizing outside conventional electoral politics.
ExtremismLedger classifies Patriot Front's ideology as white nationalist and
neo-fascist -- this is the project's own editorial classification, based on
the organization's stated platform above, not a claim of established fact
beyond what the organization has itself published.
Leadership
Thomas Rousseau has led Patriot Front as its founder since its 2017 founding.
No other individual has been documented in a comparable public leadership
role.
Organizational activity
The group organizes members into coordinated, uniform-dressed marches and
banner/flyer distribution events, typically announced only to members
shortly beforehand. It has appeared annually at the March for Life rally in
Washington, D.C. since 2019, including in January 2025.
Documented incidents / conduct supporting inclusion
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho (June 2022): 31 Patriot Front members, including
Rousseau, were arrested after police stopped a U-Haul carrying riot shields
and a smoke grenade near a Pride event the group is reported to have planned
to disrupt. All were charged with misdemeanor conspiracy to riot. A jury
convicted five defendants in July 2023; approximately twenty others pleaded
to a lesser parading-without-a-permit charge. The charge against Rousseau
personally was dismissed by the trial court in November 2023 after the court
found repeated prosecution disclosure failures; prosecutors appealed, and no
reversal has been publicly reported as of this writing. See the linked
Incident record for full sourcing.
Charlottesville-connected charge against Rousseau (2024): In February
2024, Rousseau was separately charged in Virginia with burning an object with
intent to intimidate, tied to a torch-lit march at the University of Virginia
during the August 2017 Unite the Right events -- predating Patriot Front's
founding and while Rousseau was affiliated with a different organization. He
pleaded to a reduced disorderly-conduct charge in October 2024, receiving a
suspended sentence and no jail time. This item concerns Rousseau personally
before Patriot Front existed, not conduct by Patriot Front as an
organization.
Current activity and status
Available reporting indicates Patriot Front remains an active organization as
of 2026, continuing its pattern of periodic public demonstrations.
