Attack on Government Institution
United States Capitol
On January 6, 2021, a large crowd of supporters of President Donald J. Trump gathered in Washington, D.C., as Congress met to count and certify the Electoral College votes from the 2020 presidential election. Members of the crowd breached restricted grounds and forced entry into the United States Capitol, assaulting law-enforcement officers and disrupting the congressional certification proceeding. The House and Senate were evacuated or secured while the Capitol was occupied, and Congress resumed the certification process later that evening. The U.S. Department of Justice and the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack have extensively documented the attack, the events preceding it, and efforts to interfere with the lawful transfer of presidential power.

- Final Report of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol — U.S. Government Publishing Office / House Select Committee (12/22/2022) [Primary]
In its final report, the House Select Committee concluded that Donald Trump was, in the Committee's own words, 'the central cause of January 6th,' stating 'none of the events of January 6th would have happened without him.' The Committee referred four charges concerning Trump to the Department of Justice: obstruction of an official proceeding of Congress, conspiracy to defraud the United States, making a false statement, and inciting, assisting, or aiding and comforting an insurrection. These are the Committee's own conclusion and referrals, presented here as its own attributed finding -- not a court determination or an ExtremismLedger characterization, and referrals are not themselves criminal charges filed by a prosecutor.
